Art – Grades 4-5

  • This contest is an individual competition and involves the study of 40 paintings from the National Gallery of ART in Washington, D.C. and from Texas art galleries and museums. Students learn to recognize and identify various works of art and the artists who created them. As part of their study, students will demonstrate a basic understanding of art history and interpret ideas and moods in original art works.
  • Study materials will be available for the coach to use with students.

 

Creative Writing – Grade 2

  • This contest is an individual competition and is designed to promote creativity in an academic format and to encourage writing skills at an early grade level.
  • Some writing prompts will be available for the coach to use with students.

 

Maps, Charts, and Graphs - Grade 5

  • Coach: Tracy Brawner / Meet on Tuesdays after school
  • This contest may be an individual or team competition, depending on the decision of the district executive committee. The maps, charts, and graphs contest is designed to help students learn to obtain information from a variety of maps, charts, and graphs including world maps, pie charts, bar graphs and local area maps.
  • Study materials will be available for the coach to use with students.

 

 

Number Sense – Grades 4-5

  • Coach: Jenny Aderholdt / Meet  Thursdays after school
  • This contest may be an individual or team competition, depending on the decision of the district executive committee. Every day, individuals are called upon to use their ability to make quick mental calculations to make decisions. The development of such abilities is an integral part of the math curriculum. Concepts covered include, but are not limited to: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions, and use of mathematics notation.
  • Study materials will be available for the coach to use with students.

 

Oral Reading – Grades 4-5

  • Coach: Debbie Dixon / Meet on Thursdays after school
  • This contest is an individual competition and provides opportunities for students to: analyze text; grow and develop as performers; communicate a message to and audience; and to perform an artistic creation. The oral reading competition should be an extension of the classroom literary and language arts activities in poetry, short stories, and children’s fiction.
  • The coach will work with students to select passages for oral reading.

 

Ready Writing – Grades 3-5

  • This contest is an individual competition and allows students to build writing skills as well as refine writing abilities. This contest helps students to write a clear and correct paper that is interesting and original.
  • Study materials will be available for the coach to use with students.

 

Spelling – Grades 3-5

  • This contest may be an individual or team competition, depending on the decision of the district executive committee. This contest is designed to expose students to a wide variety of vocabulary words. Preparation for this contest should include instruction in the rules of the English language, meanings and definitions, and root words.
  • A current list of words will be provided for the coach to use with students.

 

Storytelling – Grades 2-3

  • This contest is an individual competition and allows participants to develop skills in listening, thinking, and speaking. The contest also allows for the development of creative expression.
  • For practice, coaches can use stories from any good children’s books and magazines.

 

 

Music Memory – Grades 2-4

  • Coach: Daniel Shea / Meet Thursdays after school
  • This contest is an individual competition.  It consists of students listening to and learning about fine pieces of music literature taken from a variety of music genres.  Students will be expected to listen to selections of music and identify the name of the selection and of the composer. 
  • Study materials will be available for the coach to use with students.
